We’re Still Here

We’re Still Here - Melissa Herman

On the 14thJune 2017 the British Public were horrified as we watched Grenfell Tower burn, killing 72 people. 3 years on and the fight for justice is still in full swing. This documentary follows the story of people personally affected by the housing crisis in London. They explain the prejudice, the lies and poor treatment that they received following the horrific event. Their protests lead them onto the streets and into banks where they expressed how unfair the clauses were that linked them to affordable housing. People’s communities were sold and bulldozed down in order to create new, modern housing that these individuals could not afford. Most were offered apartments the other side of the country meaning they had to leave their lives behind. What would you do?

I found this documentary really interesting as this was a topic I had never, personally been affected by. This eye-opening documentary taught me that the UK economy does not always help people out or have their best interests at heart. Housing is a human right and this conflict lead to a community uniting to fight for their rights. Highly recommend watching this documentary as it is a hard hitting, close to home concern which everyone living in the UK should be enlightened to.
