Bring Down the Walls

Bring Down the Walls- Phil Collins

A refreshing change from heavier documentary, Bring Down the Walls offers a refreshing view on the USA oppressed communities. The USA has the largest incarceration rate in the world, with around a third of black American’s with a record. Bring Down the Walls is an organisation that aims to support the Black, LGBTQ+ and other minority communities when suffering injustice from the law enforcement. This group uses music as a way of offering these individuals  a platform to express their feelings. This liberating house culture accepts all and is a thriving reception to all emotions and stories. The message of unity and support was first seen in the 80s as they began to question whether prison would ever be a successful strategy with dealing with crime.

Throughout this documentary, you are exposed to personal stories from the organisation, family members and people who have been released, turning their lives around through this process. This is a very uplifting and powerful message as prejudice is still prevalent in modern day society. I found this a very relevant documentary in the current climate. These stories are ones that we are seeing today throughout the Black Lives Matter movement. Highly recommend this documentary to anyone who wants to further their knowledge regarding the current stance through a more light-hearted film.
