To See You Again

To See You Again (Volverte a Ver) is a film by Carolina Corral about the discovery of a mass grave in Mexico. Corral follows a group of women searching for the bodies of their family members, and their uncovering of a mass grave used as a dumping ground for well over a hundred corpses. They put their normal lives on hold to help identify these bodies, and give them burials they deserve. Very minimal filmmaking is employed by Corral which really works in the films favour. Score isn’t needed to tell you how to feel, the subject speaks for itself more than enough.

One of the few things I can think to talk about in terms of the filmmaking is it’s tasteful use of striking and unforgettable imagery, most notably the sketches of the victim’s clothes that are used in the identification process. If the film got to be shown in a cinema, I can guarantee the room would be silent as the credits rolled and you’re forced to see the sketches up close.  It’s a powerful story, and one which I’m disappointed I hadn’t heard of before. It’s hard to imagine what they went through, and the fact that they used their experiences to help others is truly extraordinary.
