The Go-Go’s Review
This is a light-hearted, but in depth, look into one of the world’s most famous and successful bands, The Go-Go’s. This film explores their long career, including all the highs and lows, with intimate and candid interviews with those the band called their own. With this documentary, a layer is peeled off the face of the band and we dive underneath. We see a group of women and their journey towards success in an industry and world which was opposing them. Thankfully, these women make it work and their career skyrockets in a way they deserve, but how they got to this point is a journey full of battles which come to light in this documentary. The film doesn’t stray away from the dark truths of the ‘rock and roll’ scene or the betrayal of friendship for money, making it far more respectful than those who would gloss over the pain that comes with success. It is an inspiring piece, not just for hopeful musicians, but for women.
The Go-Go’s did something that no one would’ve thought possible, in a time far less accepting than our own, which has yet to be replicated. Meeting these women through the camera it is clear why; each one of them is a powerful, driven, and brave person who isn’t afraid to go against the norm. This film explores the freedom found in expressing yourself without worrying what others think, something which inspires me as well as many others. The question I’m left with at the end is why aren’t The Go-Go’s in the ‘Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’?
