The Business Of Thought: A Recorded History Of Artists Space
The Business Of Thought delves briefly into the history of Artists Space, a non-profit art organisation and gallery in New York City. This short documentary looks back at the constantly shifting art scene from the early seventies when the organisation was founded, right up to today. The relationships between art and politics, art and society and the many different sectors of art itself are also explored throughout.
The documentary additionally highlights how certain moments in history such as the AIDs crisis effected the art industry and the tone of the art being created at that time. The Artists Space itself is exactly as described, it is a dedicated space where artists of all different mediums such as music, sculpture and poetry can all use to explore their mediums with complete creative freedom.
One of the most attractive aspects of the documentary is the nostalgic visual quality created through the use of archival footage and still images, creating almost a scrapbook of memories of the organisation’s history. The creative visual style of the documentary syncs perfectly with the subject of the film itself, forming a well-rounded aesthetically pleasing film.
